Out at sea fishing, Asterix and Obelix are blown off course in a storm. Luckily they land on the shores of a Roman colony – or is it? Teepees, totems, gobbling birds: it’s not what they’re used to.
And what are the Viking explorers in their longships doing? But perhaps 50 BC is a little too early for a voyage of discovery to this strange New World …
The authors provokingly give us entirely white or black pages cheekily justified by mists or fog. Perhaps this is a memory of Pilote days and the spirit of rebelliousness.
Be that as it may, the pages with the Indians are delicious, and the gobble-gobbles priceless. When Asterix and Obelix discover the New World, they don’t do things by halves. And so the album, which sees them blazing a trail through territory belonging to Oompah Pah the Indian (another Goscinny and Uderzo character) has benefited from an American translation alongside the traditional English one. The same goes for Asterix the Legionary, Asterix at the Olympic Games, Asterix in Britain and Asterix and Cleopatra.
Some character names have changed too. For instance, Vitalstatistix in the English versions becomes Macroeconomix in the American.
