Can there ever be a happy ending for star-crossed lovers Melodrama and Histrionix, whose fathers are rival chieftains of the same village?
The only hope is to call in Asterix, Obelix and Getafix to sort out the feud, the intriguing of the sinister traitor Codfix, and the military might of Rome. Watch out for some interesting new magic potions …
Albert Uderzo has to face a great challenge now that he is alone in creating the adventures. Many had predicted that Asterix would die with René. But Albert has taken up the torch again so as not to disappear in grief. This is an excellent Asterix album. Albert has been moulded by the 26 years of the authors’ work together.
The album draws on references and themes of all kinds: the love story, for instance, recalls Romeo and Juliet, and the great divide, according to the author, is a direct allusion to the Berlin Wall. Other people had seen this as a reference to France being divided into two during the period leading up to François Mitterrand’s election as president.
Albert Uderzo: «It’s a reference to the period in history when I was writing the adventure. I thought it more amusing to convert the wall into a ditch. But what I find amazing is that people have thought it referred to a lot of things, but never to the Berlin Wall. Nobody mentioned it at all. I was given several explanations, such as the split between the Walloons and the Flemish, or others, but never the real reason.»
