The brave Iberians are holding out against Julius Caesar, like Asterix and his friends. So when Chen Huevos y Bacon’s son is taken hostage, who better to rescue him than the Gauls?
Taking him home to Hispania, now Spain, they tangle with the tourist industry and flamenco, and face a wild aurochs in the arena – or bullring. And can it be true? Cacofinix finds a fan in little Pepe!
«It’s spainful» is one of the many puns in the album, where the authors’ talent is still true to form. The characterisation of Pepe and Huevos y Bacon is such that they go beyond the context of the album, becoming heroes in their own right.
Asterix albums are very faithful (in their own way) to the chronology of historical events. This one features the Battle of Munda (45 BC), in which Caesar defeats Pompey’s generals. The battle follows on from that of Thapsus (46 BC), which is referred to in Asterix the Legionary, and which saw Caesar winning a decisive victory over the troops and supporters of Pompey.
